Backward Flag Brewing Company
Our Story
Our story starts like most. A life changing experience with the introduction to craft beer and quickly after came the desire to learn how to make it.
In 2007 we were fortunate to have a friend who was a great home brewer. He was not only passionate about making beer but he also wanted to teach others, we were happy to be his students. The first beer we ever brewed was an extract clone of Stone’s Smoked Porter. We added extra smoke. It was terrible.
That first batch stoked the fire for learning how to make great beer. That was the only extract batch we ever brewed. We immediately went out and bought every gadget and brewing book we could afford and started all grain brewing with our second batch. Our beer was starting to be pretty damn good. And then we were deployed. Stuck in the dusty land of no beer. But we had our books and we started to build a dream of opening a brewery.
We returned home and continued developing great beer and we began planning the future of Backward Flag Brewing Company.
Our Mission
When we began planning 6 years ago we developed 3 goals for Backward Flag Brewing Company.
Quality. We will always strive to brew with the highest quality of ingredients and the greatest attention to detail that we can. Why use vanilla extract when you can use fresh vanilla beans? We care about our beer. It is our craft. We will always be proud to stand behind each small batch that flows from our taps to your glass.
Community. We care about the people who make what we do possible. You. Together we build a community. We want our brewery to be a place where you can come connect and support each other. Because of where we come from we have a special place in our hearts for those who wear a uniform and sacrifice their time and lives so that we may feel safe and protected. We will occasionally have special batches of beer that will be used to raise donations for our military, police and firemen.
Education. We believe that anyone can enjoy craft beer, whether you consider yourself a beer novice or a Master Cicerone. We also believe that everyone needs a place to start and we would like to be the place you come to. Most of the breweries that we have been to offer very educational tours of the brewery and an overview of the brewing process, but we don’t think it should stop there. We want to be there to assist you in discovering things like how the proper pour into the right glass can change everything you know about beer or help you identify the source of aroma of your favorite beer. We believe the more you know about beer the more you will love it and will want to go out and discover all of the other great craft breweries New Jersey has to offer…kind of goes back to that community thing…
The Founders
Charles Fisher: Charlie is the hands behind our beer. Every great recipe is just words on paper without the right brewer to make it happen. Charlie is our extremely detail oriented (sometimes obsessive) brewer. Charlie Fisher has spent 20+ years serving in the military and continues to serve as a UH-60 Blackhawk Test Pilot in the New Jersey Army National Guard.
Torie Fisher: Torie has almost 8 years of brewing experience. She assists in brewing operations as well as recipe development. Every great brewer that brews great beer needs a trusted palate to say that it is, in fact, great beer. Torie is the palate of the brewery. She also enjoys sharing her knowledge of brewing, serving and tasting with anyone who has a desire to learn. Torie has over 12 years serving in the military and continues to serve in the New Jersey Army National Guard as a UH-60 Crew Chief.
